The Courtsword of Sir James Duff Fourth Earl of Fife

This is the court sword of Sir James Duff (1776 - 1857).  James Volunteered to help Spain against Napoleon. He fought at Talavera as a Major-General.
Back in Fife he served as Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire 1813 - 1856 and also as Member of Parliament of Banffshire 1818-1827.
As the Lord Lieutenant Sir Duff was the commanding officer of the armed forces of Banffshire.

The most of his properties where sold at the "Estate collection of late James Duff" in the 1920's. So was his courtsword.

It was eventually bought by Stephen J Gledhill Master Gunmaker of the Royal Armouries in Leeds.
He describes the courtsword like this:
"THE SWORD HAS AN ENGRAVED BRONZE ADAMESK URN POMMEL.
THE BRONZE HILT RETAINS 80% OF THE ORIGINAL MERCURIC FIRE GILT.
THE ORIGINAL WOOD GRIP IS BOUND WITH BRONZE DOG TOOTH RIBBON BROKEN BY FINE SILVER WIRE.
THE DOUBLE EDGED BLADE ALSO CARRIES ENGRAVINGS ON BOTH SIDES."

Total length is 97 cm. Bladelength is 80 cm
